Crypto Donations (Asset Donations): Embracing Modern Giving

More and more churches are discovering that their donors want to give in ways beyond traditional credit cards and checks. Whether it’s Bitcoin, Ethereum, stocks, or other appreciated assets, today’s givers often hold wealth in forms that can be donated tax-efficiently while supporting your ministry. OnlineGiving.org’s Asset Donations feature brings all of these non-cash gifts into one place, so you can view, manage, and process them with the same ease as your regular donations.

Why Non-Cash and Crypto Giving Matters

Donors who give appreciated assets—such as cryptocurrency or securities—often receive significant tax benefits. When they donate assets that have increased in value, they can avoid capital gains tax while still claiming a charitable deduction for the fair market value. For churches, accepting these gifts opens the door to donors who might not otherwise give, or who can give more generously because of the tax advantages. It’s a win-win: your ministry receives the full value of the gift, and the donor maximizes their stewardship.

Cryptocurrency donations in particular have grown in popularity. Donors who hold Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin, and other supported coins can give directly from their wallets. OnlineGiving.org handles the conversion to U.S. dollars, so your church receives funds in your normal currency. The process is secure, transparent, and integrated with your existing giving workflow.

One Place for All Asset Types

The Asset Donations page in your control panel unifies multiple types of non-cash gifts. You’ll see cryptocurrency donations alongside stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estate, personal property, business interests, and other non-cash assets. Each transaction shows the asset type, name, quantity, and dollar value. You can filter by date range, fund, donor, asset type, and status. Export to CSV for your records or ChMS, and use the built-in report and heatmap to understand giving patterns over time.

How It Connects to Your Ministry

Asset donations integrate with your ChMS (Church Management System) when you use a supported integration such as Ministry Platform, Rock RMS, Breeze, Planning Center, and others. Donations are recorded in your ChMS with the appropriate payment type, so your finance team and donor records stay consistent. Donors can also view their crypto and asset giving history from their giving profile, and you can send them confirmation emails just like with card or check donations.

In this article, we’ll overview the OnlineGiving.org Crypto Donations and Asset Donations feature.

Viewing Asset Donations

How to Access the Asset Donations Page

  1. Log in to the control panel.
  2. In the left navigation, under Giving, click Asset Donations.
  3. The Asset Donations page loads with the current year’s date range by default.

If your church has the Crypto Donations feature enabled and you click Manage Crypto Donations from the nav, you’ll be redirected to the same Asset Donations page with a filter applied for cryptocurrency only. Both links lead to the same unified view.

Understanding the Transaction Table

The main table lists all non-cash asset donations that match your current filters. Each row shows:

  • Date: When the donation was made.
  • TXN#: The transaction ID (gateway transaction ID).
  • Amount: The dollar value of the donation (USD).
  • Name: Donor name.
  • Fund: The gift fund the donation was designated to.
  • Sub Fund: Sub-fund, if applicable.
  • Asset Name: The specific asset (e.g., BTC, ETH, stock ticker).
  • Asset Type: Cryptocurrency, Stocks/Bonds, Real Estate, etc.
  • Qty: Quantity of the asset donated.
  • Status: Approved, Pending, or Cancelled.

Click any row to open the transaction detail modal (invoice view) for more information.

Stats Summary and Metrics

At the top of the page, you’ll see summary cards for Approved, Pending, and Cancelled transactions. Each shows the total dollar amount and count. When a date range is selected and the result set is within limits, a heatmap and forecast chart may appear to help you visualize giving patterns over time. Use the Show Chart checkbox to toggle the chart visibility, and the Expand / Collapse buttons to adjust the metrics section.

How Crypto Giving Works

Donor Experience for Crypto

When a donor chooses to give cryptocurrency, they select the crypto option on your giving page, choose the coin (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum), and enter the amount they wish to donate. They receive a unique deposit address and instructions to send the crypto from their wallet. Once the transaction is confirmed on the blockchain, the system converts the crypto to U.S. dollars and records the donation. The donor receives a confirmation email, and the gift appears in their giving history.

Crypto to USD Conversion

OnlineGiving.org uses a secure crypto exchange partner to convert donated cryptocurrency to U.S. dollars. The conversion happens automatically when the blockchain confirms the transfer. Your church receives the net amount in USD after any applicable fees. The transaction is recorded with the USD value at the time of conversion, so your financial records and ChMS integration use consistent dollar amounts.

Admin Processing and Actions

Viewing Transaction Details

  1. On the Asset Donations page, click any transaction row.
  2. A modal opens with the full transaction details, including donor information, fund designation, asset type, quantity, value, and status.
  3. From the modal, you can access options to edit the fund or sub-fund, view the batch, or open the transaction in a new window.

Editing Funds and Sub-Funds

If a donation was designated to the wrong fund or sub-fund, you can correct it from the transaction detail view. Use the edit option to change the fund and sub-fund, then save. The update will sync to your ChMS if you have an integration enabled.

Using Filters

Use the Filters dropdown to quickly apply common views:

  • Pending Transactions
  • Approved Transactions
  • Cancelled Transactions
  • ChMS-specific filters (e.g., MP Pending, Breeze Recorded) when you have a ChMS integration

You can also use the search row in the table to filter by date range, amount, name, fund, sub fund, asset name, asset type, quantity, and status. Active filters appear as removable chips above the table. Click the X on a chip to clear that filter.

Reports and Exports

View Report

Click the View Report button to open the donation report in a new tab. The report uses your current date range and filters. A date range is required for the report to run.

Exporting to CSV

Use the Export Results dropdown to export your filtered transactions. Options include:

  • Export CSV Spreadsheet (standard)
  • Export CSV Spreadsheet (Shortened)
  • Export CSV Spreadsheet (Generic)
  • ChMS-specific formats (SalesForce, One Church Software, Breeze, Rock RMS, etc.) when applicable

The export applies your current filters, so narrow the date range or other criteria before exporting if you want a smaller dataset.

Crypto Billing

If your church accepts cryptocurrency donations, click the Crypto Billing button to view crypto exchange invoices. This shows billing details related to the crypto conversion service. You can view individual invoices and print them for your records.

Asset Types Supported

The Asset Donations feature supports the following asset types:

  • Cryptocurrency: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin, and other supported coins
  • Stocks, Bonds & Mutual Funds: Securities donated through a brokerage
  • Real Estate: Property donations
  • Personal Property: Vehicles, art, collectibles
  • Business Interests: Ownership interests in businesses
  • Other Non-Cash Assets: Miscellaneous appreciated assets

Each type is clearly labeled in the Asset Type column. You can filter by asset type using the search row.

ChMS Integration

Asset donations integrate with supported ChMS platforms such as Ministry Platform, Rock RMS, Breeze ChMS, Planning Center, Church Community Builder, and others. When a donation is recorded, it can be synced to your ChMS with the appropriate payment type (e.g., Non-Cash Asset). If transactions are pending ChMS recording, you may see an alert on the page with an option to batch submit them for recording. Check with your ChMS integration documentation for details specific to your system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What cryptocurrencies can donors give?

OnlineGiving.org supports multiple cryptocurrencies through the CryptoExchange system, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin, and others. The exact list depends on your church’s configuration. Contact support@onlinegiving.org if you need to enable additional coins.

How long does a crypto donation take to confirm?

Blockchain confirmation times vary by network. Bitcoin and Ethereum typically confirm within minutes to an hour, depending on network congestion. The donation appears as Pending until the blockchain confirms the transfer, then it moves to Approved and the USD value is recorded.

Can I filter to see only cryptocurrency donations?

Yes. Use the Asset Type search field and enter “cryptocurrency” (or “crypto”), or use the Filters dropdown if a crypto-specific filter is available. You can also click Manage Crypto Donations from the nav, which redirects to the Asset Donations page with the cryptocurrency filter pre-applied.

Do asset donations sync to my ChMS?

Yes, when you have a supported ChMS integration. Asset donations are recorded with the appropriate payment type (e.g., Non-Cash Asset) and sync to your ChMS like other donation types. If you see pending ChMS transactions, use the batch submit option on the page to retry recording.

Where do I find crypto billing and invoices?

Click the Crypto Billing button on the Asset Donations page. This opens the crypto exchange invoices view, where you can see billing details and print invoices for your records.

Can donors view their crypto and asset donation history?

Yes. Donors can view their crypto giving history and non-cash asset history from their giving profile. Each history view shows donations for the selected date range and fund, with the same filtering options available in the admin view.

What if crypto donations are not enabled for my church?

If you click Manage Crypto Donations and crypto is not yet enabled, you’ll see an informational page with a link to download the guide for accepting cryptocurrency donations and a video walkthrough. Contact support@onlinegiving.org or call (615) 206-4000 to get started with crypto giving.
