Resolved – Google Cloud Outage Impacting Majority of Internet
On June 12, 2025, OnlineGiving.org experienced temporary service interruptions due to a major outage at Google Cloud Platform (GCP), one of the trusted infrastructure providers we use to deliver services to our church partners.
This outage was not isolated to OnlineGiving.org. It impacted hundreds of thousands of websites and services globally, including many of the largest and most recognizable brands on the internet—such as Spotify, Discord, Google.com, UPS, Etsy, Cloudflare, Box, Shopify, Ecobee, AT&T, Claude, YouTube, Gmail, DoorDash, Nextdoor, Vimeo, USPS, and many others.
The disruption at Google was caused by a failure within Google’s Identity and Access Management (IAM) system—the internal service Google uses to manage authentication and permissions between systems. IAM acts as a “gatekeeper” that allows cloud services to verify they’re allowed to talk to each other.
In simpler terms, the outage meant that front-end services like OnlineGiving.org’s cloud platform couldn’t reach back-end services like databases—even though both were working. IAM blocked those connections from being approved. This also affected Google’s own tools—including Sign In with Google, which was unavailable during the outage.
